MOST COMMON DISEASES

Diabetes is one of the most common diseases which are suffered by the people all over the world. Though this disease is expressed in only one word it has got far reaching effects. If a person falls in the vicious circle of diabetes then he/she will have to bear with it for his/her whole life. It is so because diabetes is a chronic disease and thus it cannot be cured and can only be controlled. Diabetes basically affects the energy producing function of the body. Thus glucose, which is the energy provider, starts settling in the bloodstream. This leads to various complications and consequently diabetes. Diabetes basically pertains to blood glucose levels. Blood glucose levels refer to the amount of glucose or sugar present in the blood. The measurement of blood glucose levels is done in millimeters per liter. Normally, the blood glucose levels throughout the day, remains somewhere near 4-8 millimeters per liter. Thus in case of diabetes the blood glucose levels cross this limit and thus it affects the person. Now it is also important to control the blood glucose levels because if the blood glucose level increases then it is harmful for small blood vessels. Thus maintaining the blood glucose levels is a must for a diabetes patient.

NOT IN THE MOOD

Our Saturday project is to get our two closets organized.  We went to look for some walk in closet organizers, and found that we had a lot of different types to choose from.  No mater what the type though, it still involved having to assemble them, and that job fell to me.  I wasn't really in the mood.  I had so much work to try and get finished.  But we went out early to pick them up and brought the kits home.  Then I let them sit the entire week while I had to finish projects for work.  Not to mention the things I already had to get done around the house.  When Saturday came I opened the first kit, then the closet.  Debbie had failed to take the stuff out of the closet, so I had to do that first.  I stacked it all up on one side of the room.  I couldn't believe the amount of things still in that closet.  The measuring and marking of the closet then took about an hour, maybe a little more.  Then I got ready to do some drilling and the drill broke.  A short trip to the hardware store ended up taking close to three hours, because I got a flat tire on the way.

FEELING MUCH BETTER

My husband has just come back from the trip he took with his brother to the site of his new vacation home.  They stayed a couple extra days, trying to complete some special touches to the house.  My husband says the house is turning out beautifully.  He and his brother hit a few snags with the landscaping.  The people who were supposed to do the driveway and the people who were installing the underground sprinklers had a little conflict with the wiring.  One or the other accidentally cut the wiring that was put in when they were installing home security wiring near the back porch.  They all decided they were putting the shrubbery a little near the underground wiring and to prevent future problems with roots, they would re-position the shrubbery and put it on the other side of the driveway so that it would not be bumped to closely up to the foundation.  My husband and his brother were glad they were there, or they would have lost a couple days work and possibly gotten behind on finishing the work on the house.  It seems the work is already a couple weeks over schedule because of the rainy weather.

FLU SHOT

How exactly did I end up buying a few bottles of hair loss shampoos?   I’m not losing my hair and, besides that, hair loss shampoos only really help women.  I’m sure there’s a lot of desperate men out there that try hair loss shampoos, but I’m not one of them.  I don’t need to and I’d definitely feel embarrassed buying them up at the counter.  So where did these shampoos come from?  I was at Walgreen’s earlier, buying some toothpaste, floss, and I picked up some cold and flu medication since the cold and flu season is upon us.  I know, I know.  I should have gotten a flu shot when I had the chance, but I never found the time.  Anyway, I know I picked up some shampoo too along with some deodorant.  Maybe I wasn’t looking and picked out the wrong bottles of shampoo by mistake.  But I didn’t even know that Walgreen’s sold hair loss shampoos.  Isn’t that something that you need to get a prescription for?  Then again, maybe one of the clerks made a mistake and left it out there on the racks.  I don’t know.  I do know that I’m going to go back up there tomorrow after work and return those bottles of hair loss shampoo.  I definitely want my money back or at least to have some bottles of shampoo that I actually want.

TIME TO RELAX

Tara learned from Carol that she had had no side effects of lasik.  She also learned that Carol was getting married again.  This would make her fifth trip down the aisle.  She was going to wait until early next year to marry Tyler.  She wants to be sure this time.  Once again, she is planning a big church wedding and a big reception. I told Tara that I don't want to go this time.  We have at least bought a new bedroom set for Carol over the years.  I don't think we have to start buying her dining room set too.  Tara didn't like my comment, but she did see the truth in it. We have been to two out of four of Tara's weddings, and now another one.  Meanwhile,  I contacted a few more doctors and finally made a choice.  I thought we should go on vacation first though.  I didn't want to have the procedure done then find out that I needed more or corrective treatments and then have to go back.  Plus a vacation would help me to relax.  Tara agreed, and we wondered where to go.  In recent months we had been to Texas and Florida and  California.  What about Canada?  That was Tara's suggestion.  Canada just seems so cold, and it's been so cold here.  I couldn't see it myself.

LIVING THE HIGH LIFE

My friend Curtis just got a job as a personal injury attorney in New York.  He went to college out east at Lehigh, but came back to Chicago to go to law school at Kent.  I guess he decided that he missed being on the east coast, and decided to accept a job back out east in New York.  I recently went to visit him, and he has a pretty nice place.  He lives right near Central Park in Manhattan with a couple of his friends from college.  Curtis enjoys living the high life, and he said all of the money he earns from work goes right back out in the form of bills, rent, and entertainment.  We went out to a couple of the trendy clubs New York is known for, and it was not really my scene, but I had a pretty good time.  The tequila was flowing a bit, and we met some pretty attractive girls.  I had been to New York a few times before, so we did not really have to do all of the touristy stuff.  I got a chance to relax and hang out and see a couple of friends from college that live out there.

RESISTANT TO INSULIN

Causes of type 2 diabetes include when the body grows resistant to insulin, or when there is an insulin deficiency in the body.  Where we stand today, scientists have not yet pinpointed the exact cause of diabetes.  Even so, they have been able to come up with several factors that increase the risk and chances of a person getting diabetes.  The most common of these causes includes smoking, obesity, a history of diabetes in the family, the consumption of an unhealthy diet, the regular consumption of too many sugars, carbohydrates and proteins, emotional stress, age, and some virus infections such as the Coxsackie B virus.  To avoid being at risk for diabetes, it is important to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.  Staying away from the factors that will put you at risk only betters your chances of staying healthy.  It is mostly common sense, really.  If one stays with a work out schedule, and keeps a healthy, balance diet, as well as maintains a low stress lifestyle and stays away from smoking cigarettes, they should leave a happy and healthy life.  Rocket science, I know.  It seems so easy on paper, but if it were, there would not be so many people that suffer from diabetes.

MY EXERCISE ROUTINE

I’ve always been diametrically opposed to jogging.  Like a comedian I once heard, I always used to joke that the only reason I would ever run would be to the store for more cigarettes.  However, the age of thirty has been creeping up on me and I figured that my tiny little beer belly is never going to disappear of its own volition, so I decided that maintaining an exercise routine that didn’t eat up too much time would be beneficial to my health.

So I went out jogging.  And seriously, I had never felt healthier than after that first jog.  So I decided to forge ahead.  Not with the jogging though.  After the first few times, I decided I hated it (and it was wrecking my knees) but it really did the trick in helping me get on track to having a healthier lifestyle.  So I kept up with the exercising and over time developed a routine that is fun and helps me stay in shape.

My own personal health quest now starts with getting my needed cardio in by dancing around my living room to drum n’ bass music in my underwear three times a week for thirty minutes at a stretch.  Moving my body to deep guttural bass…oh, how it beats jogging.  The construction men across the street really seem to enjoy it as well.

Like many women, my biggest trouble spot is the tiny beer belly I mentioned before.

It’s one helluva thing to work off, even for someone like me who is pretty fit and eats healthy.  But luckily I was flipping through the pages of an old Glamour magazine one day and happened upon an article about working your abdominal muscles.  The article also included an abs program put together by trainer Kurt Brungardt, which includes ten exercises you can do to work all the muscles in your abdominal cavity.  You can check out The Complete Book of Abs or Essential Abs: An Intense 6-Week Program by Brungardt to find a similar routine.

My booty is one of the more curvaceous features on my body and my boyfriend doesn’t want me to lose it, so I just do a lot of walking to keep my legs and butt toned and leave it at that for that area.

My arms are another story.  While I have strong athletic arms, they are also covered by a layer of flab.  My muscles can get bulky if I use my set of three or five pound weights too much so I also do arm circles as well as certain Pilates or yoga moves like arm raises to work off the extra fat.

Finally, I spend about forty-five minutes twice a week practicing yoga and following along with an instructional DVD, since affording my own personal instructor is not an option at the moment.  I am also excited to report that I just purchased a yoga / kickboxing fusion DVD and I can’t wait to try it out.  And that, in a nutshell, is my exercise routine for a healthier lifestyle.
